Why? Let’s start with the positives. Firefox is great in one thing: Memory usage. If you are the kind of guy who opens 40 tabs just like me, Chrome will eventually slow your laptop and my laptop is not the strongest one to be honest. So, Firefox doesn’t use much memory to run things and it doesn’t slow that much the entire system and other activities. Some pages seemed to open more quickly with Firefox, in fact the most of them. But here’s the bad thing. It’s not that quick when you are on the page and it’s laggy when you try to scroll down. Even the videos (not only the YouTube who runs on HTML5) want some seconds to load. And being laggy is never a good thing. You want things to go fast -“gotta go fast”- and Chrome is winning on this. Another thing that is very important to me are the extensions. Chrome wins easily on this one. If you are an extension fan user, Chrome is way more suitable to you. I didn’t try the Firefox for a whole day, it wasn’t even an hour that I wanted so desperately to move to Chrome again. I am posting this anonymously because sometimes even posting seemingly harmless information about Apple on the internet is frowned upon by Apple itself, and fellow employees. I worked there for five years, leading an internal service that grew from a team of two to a team of about fifteen. I have not worked at Facebook, so everything I know about it is gathered from friends who have/are. You can ask Wei Yeh any questions about Facebook, his answer is pretty good from that perspective, but is somewhat incomplete from the Apple perspective. Apple is, bar none, the most intensely scrutinized company in the tech industry, and has been for years. After the first year of working at Apple I began to downplay the fact that I worked there, because every time a stranger or distant family member realized it, they would start pumping me for information about new products or hardware discounts. I got tired of answering the questions, and being looked at strangely. (For one thing, strangers would then automatically assume I was rich. Hah hah, no, some of us had debts and/or medical bills.) But on the other hand, having the company name on your resume, especially with a good run of time, is like a kind of magic spell that instantly shoves you to the front of the queue if you decide to work anywhere else in tech, and there’s good reason for that, and it forms the core of my answer: Apple engineers are very good at getting things done collaboratively, and they work in an environment that manages to promote that. If you are the kind of guy who opens 40 tabs just like me, Chrome will eventually slow your laptop and my laptop is not the strongest one to be honest. So, Firefox doesn’t use much memory to run things and it doesn’t slow that much the entire system and other activities. Some pages seemed to open more quickly with Firefox, in fact the most of them. But here’s the bad thing. It’s not that quick when you are on the page and it’s laggy when you try to scroll down. Even the videos (not only the YouTube who runs on HTML5) want some seconds to load. And being laggy is never a good thing. You want things to go fast -“gotta go fast”- and Chrome is winning on this. Another thing that is very important to me are the extensions. Chrome wins easily on this one. If you are an extension fan user, Chrome is way more suitable to you. I didn’t try the Firefox for a whole day, it wasn’t even an hour that I wanted so desperately to move to Chrome again. So, the verdict, I respect and I will always keep an eye on open source services but Chrome suits better to me. Again, it’s my opinion and I’m not saying I am a specialist or anything. To my usage and my activity Chrome is much better than Firefox. But I will use Firefox when I have to load a Unity flash thing because as I said above Chrome has blocked it. As for Opera, it’s a really great alternative. I used to is as my “work browser” and it was pretty good and suprisingly fast. But something is missing and I’m not sure what. The lack of extensions? It’s been almost a year since I used it so that’s all I know. I hope I helped.
